Hard Drive Lock

A hard drive can become locked if you assign a password from the bios to the hard drive. When doing this it will save the password onto the hard drive and unlike the bios is impossible to just reset with a jumper. On some computers you will notice that after entering the password 3 times it will then give you a hash code that can be any combination of letters or numbers. this hash code is your master password but must be decrypted to unlock the drive.

Crate Computers can unlock you drive and get you running again for as little as $50, and in some cases you wont lose your data on the drive!!

Laptop Power Adapters

Today I had a laptop that was brought to me that seemed to need a new power jack soldered onto the motherboard. After some investigating and diagnosing the laptop I determined that the AC Power Adapter was putting out way to much Amperage for the motherboard to handle. So with this being said I wanted to write a few tips on how to purchase the proper power adapter for your laptop.
Voltage, amperage and the jack it self needs to all match. In the case above the adapter was 7.1Amps and the laptop needed NO MORE then 6.7Amps. So it was frying the motherboard. At least in the example above, replacing the power adapter with the proper one, fixed the issue entirely.
